Betty Markey Hooper Scholarship Fund

Mrs. Hooper’s children, Robert G. Hooper and Elizabeth M. Stauffer, established The Betty Markey Hooper Scholarship Fund in memory of their mother to provide scholarships to Walkersville High School graduating seniors who exhibit financial need and demonstrate a commitment to community service. Preference is given to those attending Hood College and those who are strong B students.

Betty Markey Hooper was a lifelong Frederick County resident who graduated from Frederick High School and later from Hood College. In 1941, she moved to Walkersville where she founded the Walkersville Play Center, a preschool for local students that she operated for 19 years. Mrs. Hooper’s children, Robert G. Hooper and Elizabeth M. Stauffer, turned to the Community Foundation after their mother’s passing in July 2004 to establish The Betty Markey Hooper Scholarship Fund in keeping with charitable intentions outlined in her estate planning. The Fund provides scholarships to Walkersville High School graduating seniors who exhibit financial need and demonstrates a commitment to community service. Preference is given to those attending Hood College. Mrs. Hooper’s legacy and love for education, as well as her commitment to the Walkersville community and her college alma mater, live on through her memorial fund.
