Anthony M. Natelli Memorial Scholarship Fund

Founded by Natelli Communities for Urbana High School graduates exhibiting dedication to volunteerism.

Anthony “Tony” Natelli was synonymous with Gaithersburg-based Natelli Communities, the real estate development firm he formed with his son Thomas. Natelli Communities positively transformed the landscape of Frederick County by developing the communities of Dearbought in Frederick, Glenbrook in Middletown and the Villages of Urbana in Urbana, all known for their community-oriented development philosophy, thoughtful planning and timeless design. A New Jersey native, Mr. Natelli began his career in the accounting field at Peat, Marwick, Mitchell & Co. (now KPMG), where he served as managing partner of the company’s offices in Italy and later in Washington, DC. He left the accounting field for a successful second career in real estate in 1977, becoming a land developer in both Frederick and Montgomery counties. Mr. Natelli was the force behind the development of Avenel in Potomac, turning the once forlorn site of a planned sewage treatment facility into a prestigious community of over 900 homes and a championship golf course that has hosted a PGA Tour event for over a decade. In 1996, Mr. Natelli earned the Urban Land Institute Award of Excellence for the finest planned community in the nation for his visionary work on Avenel. His civic consciousness, community service and involvement in charitable endeavors defined his hands-on business style as did his commitment to his family. He was devoted to his wife Trudy of 47 years, his five children Nancy, Tony, Thomas, Mary, and Michael, fifteen grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and his sons and daughters-in-law Steve, Christine, Karen, Tim, and Jessica. After Mr. Natelli passed away at the age of 67 of a cerebral hemorrhage in March 2004, his son Thomas turned to the Community Foundation and made a founding gift to establish The Anthony M. Natelli Memorial Scholarship Fund to continue reaching out to those in Frederick County’s premier planned community built by Natelli Communities. The Fund awards annual scholarships to Urbana High School graduates. Preference is given to those graduates exhibiting exemplary community service above minimum graduation requirements and demonstrating a commitment to volunteerism.

Wayne C. Neely and Margaret S. Neely Frederick Scholarship Fund

Founded through Mrs. Neely’s estate provisions for Frederick County graduates, with preference to students majoring in sociology or chemistry.

Dedicated educators, Dr. Wayne and Margaret Neely served as professors at Hood College for more than four decades. Dr. Neely retired as Chairman of the Department of Economics and Sociology in 1972, and was active on many faculty committees, including the growth and development of the library, now known as the Beneficial-Hodson Library. Mrs. Neely retired as Assistant Professor Emerita of Chemistry in 1981. Her distinguished career also included serving as director of the chemistry program at Frederick Memorial Hospital School of Nursing, as well leading Hood’s nursing program affiliation with Massachusetts General and Johns Hopkins Hospitals. Dr. and Mrs. Neely were active in the community, including Rotary Club of Frederick, both being named Paul Harris Fellows. Other community involvement included Frederick County Historical Society, Arc of Frederick County, and Frederick Presbyterian Church. In addition, Mrs. Neely served as the local president of the American Association of University Women.

Parsons Newman Memorial Fund

Founded by Mr. and Mrs. John D. Hendrickson II for grants to Historical Society of Frederick County to host historical lectures in Mr. Newman’s name.

Born in the City of Frederick on January 10, 1897, Parsons Newman was the son of John Shaw Newman and Amy Rebecca Parsons. After graduating from Boys High School in Frederick on 1914, Mr. Newman attended University of Virginia, where he earned both undergraduate and law degrees. In between his degrees, he served in World War I. After earning his law degree, Mr. Newman returned to Frederick, where he practiced law for more than 50 years, concentrating in real estate property, trust and estate matters, and financial and general corporation work. He was chair of one of the Frederick County Draft Boards and a member of the Maryland State Board of Bar Examiners, evaluating applicants for admission to the bar. He served as President of the Frederick County Bar Association and as a member of the Maryland and American Bar Associations. In 1922, he ran for and was elected to the Maryland House of Delegates for a four-year term. In addition to a successful legal profession, Mr. Newman married Margaret Frances Besant, his wife of 37 years. He was active in the Frederick County community as president of the Frederick Kiwanis Club, the Historical Society of Frederick County, and the Community Chest, now known as United Way. He was a trustee of St. James School, Hood College, Home for the Aged (Record Street Home), and the C. Burr Artz Library. Moreover, Mr. Newman was an involved lifelong member of All Saints Episcopal Church. Among his personal passions, Mr. Newman enjoyed attending the Great Frederick Fair, cheering for the New York Yankees, collecting stamps, and studying history. He passed away on September 10, 1984 at the age of 87. To honor his memory and to remember his life, friends Mr. and Mrs. John D. Hendrickson II turned to the Community Foundation to establish The Parsons Newman Memorial Fund to provide funds to the Historical Society of Frederick County for a series of lectures known as the P. Newman Lecture Series.
