Augie Fund

Hand holding an apple

Founded by long-time Frederick residents to provide grants to United Way of Frederick County to support Frederick ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) programming and scholarships to students pursing post-secondary studies in culinary arts, food service, or teaching.

The founders of this fund built meaningful careers—one in banking and the other in higher education—and along the way gained a deep appreciation for the power of education and training to open doors. Wanting to give others the same opportunity, they created this fund in honor of their families, united by the shared name “Augie,” which appears on both sides of their family tree. Through grants and scholarships, the fund reflects the varied career paths of family members while focusing on helping those with limited resources take meaningful steps toward the futures they envision.
The fund’s symbol—a photograph of an apple—comes from a 100-year-old apple tree on the family’s ancestral farm in Lithuania. To the founders, the apple represents hope, growth, and the enduring promise of learning passed from one generation to the next.
