Founded by Joyce F. Bohn to provide scholarships to graduates of Walkersville High School to continue their education.
Joyce, like her late husband, Clyde, values education and understands firsthand the barriers that can prevent young people from pursuing post-secondary education and career training. She and her husband worked hard and struggled financially to earn their postsecondary degrees. Their families were of modest means, so it was not easy to find the financial resources to pursue the academic dreams that would shape their lives and careers.
Joyce received her undergraduate degree from Bridgewater College and went on to earn her master’s degree at Duke University. She taught math and later worked as a medical practice billing manager; she retired after a long and rewarding career.
Clyde’s post-secondary educational path was not traditional – after graduating from Frederick High School, he returned home and spent several years helping his parents run the family farm. After his parents retired and sold the farm, Clyde resumed his academic pursuits, earning his
undergraduate degree at Duke, and his master’s degree at the University of Maryland.
Joyce is grateful that she and Clyde were able to overcome the barriers that may have prevented them from pursuing their education. It is important to her to give back to the Frederick community by establishing a scholarship to help alleviate the financial burdens associated with education or training that so many students face. She hopes that her scholarship will help young people get on their feet after high school and set them on a path to a rewarding and meaningful life.
