Richard R. Burgee Memorial Scholarship Fund for Trinity United Methodist Church

Founded by the Church in Mr. Burgee’s memory for Church members pursuing post-secondary or graduate education.

In 1957, Richard R. Burgee began his legal career in Frederick and practiced law until his death in October 2003. Among his many community service pursuits, Mr. Burgee was a lifelong and involved member of Trinity United Methodist Church. He played an instrumental role in moving the faith congregation to its current location on West Patrick Street in Frederick. He also served as a choir director and Sunday school teacher. Trinity United Methodist Church turned to the Community Foundation to establish The Richard R. Burgee Memorial Scholarship Fund for Trinity United Methodist Church in Mr. Burgee’s memory to provide scholarships to Church members who are pursuing a post-secondary or graduate education. Scholarships are based on a mix of academic performance and financial need. The fund bearing Mr. Burgee’s name continues to aid members of the faith community to which he was committed and is a lasting testament to his life and his desire to help others in their educational endeavors.

Richard T. Lebherz Endowment Fund

Founded by Mr. Lebherz’s estate to purchase materials for C. Burr Artz Library’s Maryland Room.

A remarkable writer, Richard T. Lebherz was a graduate of St. John’s School of Frederick. He attended the Institute of Contemporary Arts in Washington and Columbia University in New York. He served during World War II from 1942-1945, beginning in the U.S. Army, where he trained with the RAF in England as a cryptographer, and later transferring to the 9th Air Force in Germany as an official U.S. Army correspondent. Writing for Time Magazine, Nova and Queen Magazine in London, The Washington Post, The Frederick News-Post, Maryland Magazine, and acting as editor and writer for Diversions, later to become Frederick Magazine, Mr. Lebherz left his mark in print as well as in the novels he penned. Moreover, he was active in local civic affairs. Mr. Lebherz served two terms as president of the Frederick County Landmarks Foundation and was appointed by Mayor Ronald Young in 1989 as Curator for the City of Frederick. He was involved with the Delaplaine Visual Arts Education Center and Hood College. He made provisions in his will to create The Richard T. Lebherz Endowment Fund to support the purchase of materials for the Maryland Room of the C. Burr Artz Library, a repository of research on the history of Maryland and Frederick County.

Founded by Mr. Kanode to support development, maintenance and operation of the Richard W. Kanode Farm Park.

Mr. Kanode passed away in 2020 at the age of 92, but in the years leading up to his passing, he was fast at work putting the pieces in place to turn his beautiful farm into a public park that would serve to connect people with nature and to provide individuals from all walks of life with access to outdoor education and programming.
