Mary A. “Mais” Quill Endowment Fund for the C. Burr Artz Library

Founded by her family for the C. Burr Artz Library to purchase materials for loan to library patrons.

Mary A. “Mais” Quill was a graduate of Gallanger School of Nursing in Washington and worked as a registered nurse in Frederick for several years. She was a member of such local organizations as St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church and Frederick Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. She volunteered at the C. Burr Artz Library for 47 years. In honor of her love for the C. Burr Artz Library, Mrs. Quill’s children created The Mary A. “Mais” Quill Endowment Fund for the C. Burr Artz Library on the occasion of her 90th birthday in 2001. The Fund is used to purchase library materials to be loaned to patrons.

Mary E. M. and Ruth E. Smith Scholarship Fund

Founded with bequests from the Smith sisters for Frederick County residents.

Sisters Ruth E. and Mary E.M. Smith dedicated their lives to education in Frederick County, teaching 42 and 44 years respectively. Mary was the first educator in Frederick County to receive a Master’s degree in education; Ruth was the second. The Smith sisters, through their wills, established The Mary E. M. and Ruth E. Smith Scholarship Fund. Though deceased, the Smith sisters continue to make an education possible for others. Their fund awards scholarships to Frederick County residents pursuing a degree from an accredited college or university, with preference given to those studying education.

Mary Gregg Cornish Memorial Fund

Founded in memory of Mary by husband Dr. Edwin R. Cornish, Jr. to support master gardener activities, gardening education, community gardens, beautification of public spaces, and library collections related to gardening.

With the fund, Dr. Cornish is honoring his wife’s love of gardening. Grants from the fund will support community gardens, including educational activities that promote gardening and the nutritional value of using local produce. Grants will also help expand library collections related to gardening, assist in beautifying public spaces with plants and flowers, and encourage youth to become involved with gardening.
