Elaine A. Heiberg Scholarship Fund for the Arts

Founded by Barbara O. Clary and Ms. Heiberg’s friends in honor of her 80th birthday for students studying the arts.

For her 80th birthday in 1999, friends of Elaine Heiberg gathered at Frederick’s Weinberg Center for the Arts to honor her lifelong dedication to the arts and to establish the scholarship that bears her name. A passionate advocate for creativity and community, Elaine advised the scholarship’s co-founder, Barbara Clary, and a small committee on shaping its broad purpose to support students pursuing artistic studies. Her leadership on the Frederick Arts Council board helped guide the Weinberg Center through pivotal changes that stabilized its operations and laid the groundwork for the thriving venue it is today, and she also played a key role in the creation of the Delaplaine Arts Center. Born in 1919 into a music-loving family in Minnesota, Elaine built a life rich in artistry and service—earning a degree in Clothing and Textiles from the University of Minnesota, designing costumes for small theaters, serving her country during and after World War II, and later working as a personnel officer at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Washington, D.C. Upon retiring to Frederick, she immersed herself in community life, leading the Historical Society of Frederick County (now Heritage Frederick), serving on the boards of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra in Frederick and the Peace Resource Center, and nurturing her love of gardening and hospitality. When she passed away in 2007, Elaine bequeathed a significant portion of her estate to her scholarship fund, ensuring that her legacy of creativity, generosity, and community enrichment would continue to make more possible for generations to come.

Mary Mason Hendrickson Memorial Fund

Founded by Mr. and Mrs. John D. Hendrickson II in memory of Mr. Hendrickson’s mother for children’s programs.

Born in 1894 in New York City, Mary Landon Carter Mason Hendrickson’s parents’ families were among Virginia’s early settlers but with her maternal grandfather from Switzerland. From infancy until her late teenage years, she lived with her widowed mother in family homes in New York, Hagerstown and Geneva, Switzerland, speaking both English and French. In 1919, she married Carroll H. Hendrickson in St. John’s Church in Hagerstown, where the couple lived for a time and welcomed their first son. The family then moved to Frederick in 1921, where Mrs. Hendrickson’s husband became a partner in the family retail store. Her other two sons were born in Frederick, and she quickly entered into the many facets of Frederick life, serving on the Altar Guild of All Saints’ Episcopal Church and volunteering as a board member of Federated Charities, Episcopal Orphan House and the Home for the Aged (Record Street Home). She was a charter member of The Garden Club of Frederick and a member of several smaller cultural and social organizations. Of a naturally cheery disposition, she was known as a gracious hostess and genuinely friendly to all with whom she made contact. She died in 1981 in the Frederick home of her last 57 years. Her primary love was always the welfare and progress of her three sons and grandchildren. To honor his mother’s memory, John D. Hendrickson II and his wife, Elizabeth, established The Mary Mason Hendrickson Memorial Endowment Fund. In keeping with Mrs. Hendrickson’s love for children, this Fund supports children’s programs.

Michael David Hendrix Memorial Scholarship Fund

Founded by wife Linda Agar-Hendrix for Frederick County high school graduates, preferably those studying information technology, the sciences, music, or the arts.

Michael David Hendrix was an accomplished engineer with Bechtel Power when he passed away from injuries sustained in an airplane accident. Mr. Hendrix’s wife, Linda, wanted to honor her husband’s memory by establishing The Michael David Hendrix Memorial Scholarship Fund. The Fund provides scholarships to Frederick County high school graduating seniors, with first preference given to those studying in scientific fields with a focus on information technology and second preference given to those studying engineering, with special consideration given to performing arts, visual arts and music majors.
