Dr. Ulysses G. Bourne, Sr. Memorial Scholarship Fund

Founded by daughter Dr. Blanche Bourne-Tyree for Frederick County Public School (MD) graduating seniors majoring in medicine or a related field.

Dr. Ulysses G. Bourne graduated from Leonard Medical College in North Carolina. By 1903, he had established a private medical practice on All Saints Street in Frederick, Maryland. In 1919, Dr. Bourne and Dr. Brooks, another local doctor, opened a hospital to better care for the African American community until Frederick Memorial Hospital was able to help two years later. In addition to his active involvement with the medical community, Dr. Bourne was dedicated to civic causes. He was president of the Frederick area NAACP for 20 years and active with many other organizations. To further her father’s legacy, Dr. I. Blanche Bourne-Tyree started The Dr. Ulysses G. Bourne, Sr. Memorial Scholarship Fund. Not only did Dr. Bourne-Tyree follow in her father’s footsteps, but also recipients of his scholarship aim to do so as well. Students who are awarded scholarships from The Dr. Ulysses G. Bourne, Sr. Memorial Scholarship Fund must be Frederick County Public School (MD) graduating seniors planning to attend a four-year educational institution of their choice to study the sciences, with intentions of pursuing a career in healthcare. Preference is given to applicants who wish to become medical doctors, like Dr. Bourne, as well as those who seek careers in the allied health professions.

Dr. V.E. Gladstone Thompson and Gloria H. Thompson Fund

Founded by wife Gloria and daughter Sonya Thompson to support Asbury United Methodist Church located in Frederick.

Dr. V.E. Gladstone Thompson was born in Trinidad and graduated from Howard University’s Dental School in Washington, D.C. In the 1950s, he made Frederick his home, where he opened a dental office and pursued a 37-year career in the field. He was only the second Black dentist in Frederick. In addition to his dental practice, he was an active community volunteer on behalf of the NAACP, Citizen’s Nursing Home and Asbury United Methodist Church. Dr. Thompson served as president of the Frederick County Dental Association and the Human Relations Commission in Frederick. He was a member of the Pro-Duffers Golf Club.

Dustin and Courtney Muse Memorial Fund

Founded by parents Pamela M. Flickinger and Donald R. Muse to provide scholarships for Frederick County youth of middle or high school age in need of financial assistance to participate in programs or camps related to athletics and performing arts.

Dustin and Courtney Muse were two Frederick youths with outstanding achievements. Most remarkable was their combined success. They were a rare find, as siblings who exhibited equally noteworthy accomplishments. Sixteen-year-old Dustin Muse was starting quarterback for the Governor Thomas Johnson High School football team. Known for his drive and determination in the sports in which he participated, Dustin also displayed scholastic success and in turn became a significant member of the high school and the Frederick community. A member of the Monocacy Middle School chorus and an honor roll student, Dustin’s younger sister Courtney was a bright 13-year-old who loved dancing, country music, playing the piano, and musical theater. Tragically, their promising, young lives were cut short when they died in a car accident in December, 2006.They are forever remembered through The Dustin and Courtney Muse Memorial Fund.
