The People Behind the Scholarships

Last month, you may have seen our list of 2020-2021 scholarship recipients announced in The Frederick News-Post. We awarded $1.8 million in scholarships to 392 students to help them pursue their postsecondary educational goals. Over the years, we have watched our scholarship recipients become doctors, nurses, and enter many areas of health care. We have helped create engineers, veterinarians, scientists, elementary, middle, and high school teachers, social workers, agri-business and farming specialists, accountants, psychologists, professional musicians and artists, and more. But you might be wondering, who makes all of these scholarships possible?

Coronavirus Doesn’t Stop Philanthropy

The Community Foundation of Frederick County has been working remotely for the past three months as our community is in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic. Our staff members have been working hard, because coronavirus doesn’t stop philanthropy, and we understand the importance of continuing to serve our community during this challenging time.

Donors Provide Broad Impact for Alzheimer’s Support

Five million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease and 50 million people are living with Alzheimer’s and other dementias worldwide. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, by 2050, the number of Americans living with Alzheimer’s is projected to rise to nearly 14 million. To raise awareness and support for the disease that has impacted millions of individuals and families, June has been named Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month by the Alzheimer’s Association.

Donald Lewis’s Legacy

Donald Lewis was a well-known Frederick County citizen from Thurmont who made a lasting impact on his community. He was an Army veteran, businessman, politician, and community philanthropist who left a permanent legacy by creating funds with The Community Foundation of Frederick County to benefit local nonprofits and provide educational opportunities.

Community Foundation Seeks 2020 Wertheimer Award Nominations

Each year, The Community Foundation of Frederick County recognizes people who are dedicated to their community and are selfless in their contributions of time, energy, and talents. They are Frederick County residents who want to make a difference in the lives of others. Do you know someone who fits this description? We are pleased to announce that the Community Foundation is accepting nominations for the 2020 Wertheimer Fellows for Excellence in Volunteerism and Youth in Action Awards through May 31, 2020.
