FREDERICK, MD – December 18, 2020: The Francis Scott Key Memorial Fund has been established with The Community Foundation of Frederick County and becomes one of its more than 740 component funds.
Founded by the Francis Scott Key Memorial Foundation, the fund’s purpose is to support the foundation’s mission of caring for the Francis Scott Key monument at Mount Olivet Cemetery and educating the community about Francis Scott Key’s historical significance, including his writing of “The Star Spangled Banner.”
Francis Scott Key was born in Frederick County in 1779. He later studied law in Annapolis and then came back home to begin his legal practice in 1801. The fund will help educate future generations about Key’s ties to Frederick County and his impact on American history.
FREDERICK, MD – August 12, 2019: The Community Foundation of Frederick County announces The Mary Gregg Cornish Memorial Fund. Established by husband Dr. Edwin R. Cornish, Jr., it becomes one of more than 700 funds under management.
With the fund, Dr. Cornish is honoring his wife’s love of gardening. Grants from the fund will support community gardens, including educational activities that promote gardening and the nutritional value of using local produce. Grants will also help expand library collections related to gardening, assist in beautifying public spaces with plants and flowers, and encourage youth to become involved with gardening.
FREDERICK, MD – November 11, 2020: During its recent FY2021 impact grantmaking cycle, The Community Foundation of Frederick County provided $374,192.10 to 40 area nonprofits dedicated to improving lives and enhancing Frederick County. This grant cycle is part of a larger grantmaking effort by the Community Foundation which distributes more than $5 million into the community annually.
The grants are designed to assist local nonprofits with projects that have meaningful and direct impact on the residents of Frederick County. As a leading source of grant funding in Frederick County, the Community Foundation supports the arts, historic preservation, agriculture, health and human services, education, cultural understanding, animal well-being, scholarships, elder care, youth programs, civic causes, and more.
Impact grant funding was provided from the following funds:

FREDERICK, MD – September 30, 2019: To honor lives well-lived, The Robert J. and George J. Hogan, Jr. Memorial Fund has been established at The Community Foundation of Frederick County and becomes one of more than 720 funds under management.
The fund was established with a bequest from Irene Hogan’s estate in memory of her husband George and son Robert. Scholarships and grants from the fund will assist students studying and pursuing careers in the construction trades at Frederick Community College.
George Hogan began working as a brick mason in Frederick County, and then worked for various construction companies in the Maryland, Virginia, and District of Columbia area. He founded Hogan & Son Construction Company and built homes in Frederick County for 10 years and rounded out his career as a building inspector for Frederick County Government for another decade. Robert Hogan learned drafting through Frederick County Public Schools Career and Technology Center. His career path included warehouse automation and robotics.
FREDERICK, MD – January 15, 2020: To support animal rescue, veganism, and wildlife conservation, The Gregory J. Reiter Memorial Fund has been established at The Community Foundation of Frederick County, becoming one of more than its 720 component funds.
Founded by Alysoun Mahoney in memory of her husband Greg, this fund supports causes to which the couple shared a commitment during Greg’s life.
The fund will support initiatives such as the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) campaign to end cruelty toward racehorses and its Community Animal Project to rescue dogs, cats, and other animals from neglect and abandonment; Animal Place’s Food for Thought program to help wildlife and environmental organizations adopt earth- and animal-friendly menu policies; and the White Coat Waste Project to end taxpayer-funded animal experiments.
FREDERICK, MD – July 20, 2020: To support the greatest needs of veterans, The Alvin F. Tesmer and John J. Hayes Veterans Memorial Fund has been established with The Community Foundation of Frederick County and becomes one of its more than 720 component funds.
Founded by John J. Hayes and Kay L. Hayes in memory of their fathers, the fund’s purpose is to provide grants to nonprofit organizations to support veterans and their immediate family including their caregivers, spouses, and children in Frederick County and Carroll County, Maryland. Preference will be given but not limited to promoting veteran wellness by supporting basic human needs, behavioral health services, and direct medical care.
Mr. and Mrs. Hayes created the fund to give back to their community. The Hayes family has a long history of military service, and Mr. and Mrs. Hayes are passionate about supporting veterans and their families. The fund in their fathers’ memory will help ensure that veterans and their families will receive vital support services for generations to come.
FREDERICK, MD – February 14, 2020: To support students pursuing their post-secondary educational goals, The Harold Glen and Audrey G. Benson Trumpower Foundation Scholarship Fund has been established with The Community Foundation of Frederick County. It becomes one of more than its 720 component funds.
Founded by the Trumpower Foundation, the fund’s purpose is to provide scholarships to Carroll County, Maryland residents. The scholarships will support students who exceed the maximum income threshold for government financial aid programs but who still have financial need or lack resources to pay for their education. Scholarships will not replace financial aid packages provided by the government or private sources but will add to or compliment other financial aid sources.
The scholarships are intended to include two-and four-year colleges and trade and technical schools, as well as non-credit certificate programs. These programs include but aren’t limited to assisted living manager, cybersecurity, certified clinical medical assistant, dental assistant, and emergency medical technician, among other areas of study. Preference will be given to students who previously received the scholarship after the first year for up to an additional three years of financial support for a maximum total support of four years, pending the student maintains a 2.0 grade point average or higher and continues to meet the scholarship requirements. The Trumpower Foundation’s primary mission is to provide scholarships and promote other educational and charitable purposes for residents of Carroll County. Mr. and Mrs. Trumpower cared deeply about education, and Mrs. Trumpower lived in Carroll County for most of her life. The scholarship was created to provide ample opportunities to Carroll County students to follow their educational and career aspirations.
