FREDERICK, MD – July 23, 2026: The Community Foundation of Frederick County awarded more than $2.6 million in post-secondary scholarships to 400 students for the 2026-2027 academic year.
Scholarship amounts ranged from $1,000 – $35,000 and support dozens of majors including Nursing, the Sciences, Business, Education and Agriculture, among many others. Scholarships were awarded to students in all phases of their post-secondary careers including graduating high school seniors, students already enrolled in college or trade school, graduate students and nontraditional students.
These awards are made possible by generous donors who believe in the value of education and who are committed to helping students achieve their educational dreams. This year, more than 200 different charitable funds at the Community Foundation provided scholarships.
Ten of those charitable funds distributed scholarships for the first time this year.
- The David J. A. Fisher Scholarship Fund is supporting two students who are studying education, one at Mount St. Mary’s University and the other at Moravian University.
- Two students studying science at Towson University each received more than $10,000 scholarships from The John and Kathryn Kugler Fund.
- The Peggy Githerman Scholarship Fund supported two students – one attending Frederick Community College and one attending the University of Maryland.
- The Theresa Wiltrout Excellence in Science Award Fund, created to honor a longtime science teacher, provided a scholarship to a student studying chemistry at the University of Maryland Baltimore County.
- A student attending Oklahoma State University to study agriculture received The Clark E. and Evelyn P. Shaff Scholarship Fund.
- The John Healey Scholarship Fund, created to honor the longtime theater manager at the Weinberg Center for the Arts, awarded a scholarship to a student studying theater arts at Muhlenberg College.
- The Karen S. Justice Scholarship for Study Abroad Fund provided a scholarship to a student studying business at Hood College.
- Created in honor of the famous fly fisherman, The Lefty Kreh Legacy Fund awarded a scholarship to a student studying biology at the University of Maryland.
- The Mary Ann Simmons Scholarship Fund awarded a scholarship to a student studying agriculture at the University of Maryland.
- A student studying art education at the Maryland Institute College of Art received a scholarship from The William H. and Margaret Lukens Scholarship Fund.
“I am the first person in my family to pursue higher education, which makes my journey exciting and challenging,” said scholarship recipient Aliany Nunez. “Being a first-generation student, I am navigating college without help from my parents, and knowing someone has chosen to invest in students facing these challenges is so encouraging. I hope to one day bless another person who needs it just as much as I did.”
