FREDERICK, MD – April 29, 2025: James and Karen Baker established The Jake Baker 27 Fund in memory of their son who took his own life in the spring of 2024. This fund will help support nonprofit organizations and programs that raise awareness about the importance of mental health and suicide prevention, as well as support family members and loved ones impacted by suicide. This becomes one of more than 818 component funds of The Community Foundation of Frederick County.
Jake grew up in Thurmont and graduated from Catoctin High School. He was voted most athletic in his class – he had broken several school records in the weight room, he was an outstanding wrestler, and he was an all-star football player whose team won the state championship his senior year. He was also voted most artistic as he loved to draw and create art.
Jake attended Clarion University, Towson University, and Slippery Rock University where he majored in marketing. At Slippery Rock, he played defensive end on the football team, helping them secure the 2023 PSAC West title and advance to the NCAA Division II Quarterfinals. Jake left lasting impressions on his teammates and coaches for his dedication and hard work. Outside of sports, Jake had a passion for art, kayaking, fishing, working on his truck, and building Lego kits.
James and Karen said that “Jake’s story serves as a powerful reminder that no one should face this journey alone. Everyone is important, and we are on a lifelong journey to make sure people know how much they mean to this world. Together, we can change the lives of many generations to come.”
As a leader in grant and scholarship funding, The Community Foundation of Frederick County has infused more than $102 million into the community since 1986.
