Don’t worry! Helpful tips for scholarship application process and FAFSA delays

The Community Foundation scholarship application will close on April 15 at 11:59 p.m. Late applications will not be accepted. Students looking for need-based financial support are required to submit their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) information, and we know that the federal Department of Education has been slow in processing FAFSA applications. We understand this is stressful, here are a few things to keep in mind:

  • The Community Foundation’s scholarship application allows students to work on the application over time so we encourage students to complete as much of the application as possible and then add FAFSA data when they do receive it.
  • Students applying through the general scholarship application are able to submit the application without FAFSA information, but that means they will not be eligible for any need-based scholarships. The Community Foundation manages hundreds of scholarship funds and not all of them are need-based so it’s still possible to get scholarships without including FAFSA information. PLEASE NOTE: this does not apply to the Trumpower Scholarship – those applications must be submitted with FAFSA information.
  • Please note that the extension of the application deadline may impact other parts of the scholarship process, but we anticipate that students who are being awarded scholarships will be notified by early June.
  • We encourage students who are still waiting for their FAFSA information to regularly log into their StudentAid.gov account to check their FAFSA status. For FAFSA-related questions, please contact your school’s financial aid office or visit StudentAid.gov.
