Mildred Trevvett was a nationally recognized music educator who positively influenced countless students. Her legacy is honored with a fund in her name with The Community Foundation of Frederick County that will benefit music educators and students for generations to come.
Ms. Trevvett’s career spanned more than 45 years teaching music in public schools. She impacted every student she encountered by sharing her love of music with them. She spent several years teaching in Crozet, Virginia, and in 1949, began her Frederick County Public Schools career at Emmitsburg and Thurmont High Schools, teaching vocal music to students.
In 1966, Ms. Trevvett moved to Governor Thomas Johnson High School, where she taught piano, theory, music, listening, and literature and later served as music department chairwoman. During her tenure, she was instrumental in developing the music advanced placement testing program and the national curriculum for the gifted and talented program. By the time she retired in 1988, Ms. Trevvett had developed more than 40 groundbreaking music courses designed as part of the Yale Curriculum Project. As a teacher, she became a nationally recognized leader in music education.
Throughout her career, Ms. Trevvett mentored gifted and talented students and was a proponent of the arts. This was demonstrated through her involvement with numerous organizations including Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Community Concert Association, Maryland Alliance for Arts Education, Frederick Arts Council, and serving as an organizing member of the Choral Arts Society. She also shared her talents with students at Frederick Community College, and her music listening courses were a favorite with senior citizens. Her accomplishments resulted in receiving the prestigious Agnes Meyer Outstanding Teacher Award, presented by The Washington Post. In 2000, she was inducted into the Maryland Music Educators Hall of Fame.
After Ms. Trevvett passed away, her niece, Jane Clark Peluso, turned to the Community Foundation in 2011 to establish The Mildred B. Trevvett Music Education Fund. The fund’s purpose is to support music educators in furthering their own professional development through didactic training or other recognized methods of professional development. Preference is given to music educators from learning institutions within Frederick County. The fund also awards grants to nonprofits to assist with music educator training, such as master classes, master class fees, and/or payment of related training expenses.
Ms. Trevvett felt strongly that music should be a part of everyone’s life. With the fund in her memory, her love of music will be carried on for many generations by helping music teachers expand their skills and knowledge.

Dan Crozier was passionate about music and promoting music education. His legacy lives permanently with The Community Foundation of Frederick County, and thanks to his generosity and vision, countless Frederick County residents will benefit from a better appreciation, understanding, and enjoyment of all music types for generations to come.
Dr. Crozier spent his life in service to others, both as a military officer and a medical doctor. He had a lengthy military career, retiring as a colonel, and served in both World War II and the Korean War. He later assumed command of the U.S. Army Medical Unit at Fort Detrick, which is now known as the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRID). During his retirement, Dr. Crozier continued to be actively involved in the community and served as director of the Whittaker Corporation Indonesian Hospital Project, was a member of the American Red Cross, and served on the Service to Military Families Committee at Fort Detrick.
Dr. Crozier passed away in 1994. He set up a trust in his will to promote music appreciation throughout Frederick County. For many years, the trust awarded grants and scholarships to create awareness about music in the Frederick County community. In 2004, The Dan Crozier Music Trust Fund was established with the Community Foundation with proceeds from The Dan Crozier Music Trust to continue Dr. Crozier’s legacy.
The Dan Crozier Music Trust Fund’s purpose is to promote music appreciation by providing grants to Frederick County musical organizations for sheet music, instruments, and other necessary supplies and materials and to provide support for students pursuing formal music education and training. The fund also helps to underwrite the costs of presenting and expanding the number of band and musical concerts in Frederick County.
To date, the fund has distributed nearly $78,000 in total grants to support these purposes. Providing broad impact to promote music, the fund has supported organizations such as Frederick Children’s Chorus for its spring concert and summer camp sheet music purchases. Frederick County Public Schools has received support for its elementary instrumental music library and pianos for Brunswick High School. Frederick Regional Youth Orchestra has received grants for jazz music purchases, and Brunswick High School Drama Boosters has received support for its spring musical.
Because of Dr. Crozier’s generosity, Frederick County citizens have and will continue to benefit from his fund’s support. Dr. Crozier’s love of music and passion for music education, especially with younger generations, will be carried out in perpetuity through his fund with the Community Foundation, and many more students will benefit from musical education support.
July 4th has come and gone again, and we celebrated our country’s independence. This holiday also means that it’s officially summertime. Vacation travel is in full swing, and many people visit the battlefields and museums and parks in our area dedicated to preserving the history of the United States as well as Frederick County’s history.
America’s Civil War had many events that occurred in Frederick County. Farmhouses, churches, and other buildings throughout the county were used as medical hospitals. In the early 1990s, Frederick County became home to the National Museum of Civil War Medicine. The idea to preserve this part of history came from Dr. Gordon E. Dammann, an Illinois dentist and collector of Civil War medical artifacts, and author of a three-volume Pictorial Encyclopedia of Civil War Medical Instrument and Equipment. The museum highlights innovative aspects of Civil War medicine such as a field dressing station, field hospital, and evacuation of wounded soldiers and incorporates the artifacts into the exhibits.
With many history buffs as Frederick County residents, we’ve helped people create funds that preserve our heritage, such as The Frank R. Parsons Fund for the National Museum of Civil War Medicine. Mr. Parsons created the fund through his 2009 Wertheimer Fellow for Excellence in Volunteerism Award, which he received from the Community Foundation for his extraordinary volunteer efforts. His interest in Civil War history led him to become a master docent at the museum, and so he dedicated his fund to support its community education efforts.
The Robert E. Gearinger National Museum of Civil War Medicine Endowment Fund was created in 1994 by the Fredericktown Bank & Trust (now PNC Bank) board of directors to honor Mr. Gearinger’s 46 years of service to the bank. His interest in the Civil War and his volunteer service as president of the museum’s board catalyzed the fund’s creation.
Other funds that have provided grants to the museum include The DeWalt Willard Charitable Gift Fund, The Frederick Mutual Insurance Company Donor-Advised Fund, The Historic Preservation Field of Interest Fund, The Mr. and Mrs. Charles A. Nicodemus Family Fund, The PNC Charitable Gift Fund, and Community Foundation unrestricted funds.
Every grant has helped the museum grow, add exhibits and interactive experiences, expand educational programs, maintain the 200-year-old building, and much more. “These funds are fundamental to everything we do here, and they feel like family because they were formed by people who know us,” said David Price, the museum’s executive director. “I’m happy that people want to keep the museum alive and help provide a dependable, consistent source of funding.”
What do you want to preserve or support? Every fund is unique to the person who envisions it, and the Community Foundation can help you bring it to life.
Gregory Joseph Troy was committed to pursuing a career in law enforcement when he became ill and was diagnosed with stage four cancer. He passed away at age 30, but his memory is honored permanently with The Community Foundation of Frederick County with a fund in his name to support students pursuing careers in police work and to provide grants to support police K-9 squads.
Mr. Troy was a 1998 graduate of Middletown High School and attended the University of Maryland. He went on to work for Washington Home Remodelers supporting information technology and financial operations. He later decided to pursue a career in law enforcement with the Baltimore County Police Department. While he was waiting for his security clearance, Mr. Troy became ill and passed away. Though his career in law enforcement was never realized, countless students will be able to achieve their educational goals in honor of his memory.
After Mr. Troy passed away in 2010, his mother, Susan Troy Best, and his brother, Joshua Troy, turned to the Community Foundation to create The Gregory Joseph Troy Memorial Fund. The fund’s purpose is to provide postsecondary scholarships to future and current police officers working toward careers or advancement in criminology, police work, law enforcement, and investigative sciences. In addition, grants from the fund may be used to support police K-9 squads to purchase dogs, provide specialized training to dogs or K-9 police officers, and to support public education about police work involving K-9s.
To date, the fund has provided 7 students with scholarships totaling more than $7,000 to help support their postsecondary goals. Most recently, the fund provided grants to the Frederick Police Department and Frederick County Sheriff’s Office to purchase bite suits for their K-9 units for training. Local law enforcement members said the support from the fund will help officers stay up to date on the latest K-9 training methods to ensure the best possible community service.
“Ensuring department members have the equipment necessary to forge ahead with progressive and innovative training scenarios is an important building block for professional public safety service, upholding the highest standards of training and proficiency,” said Frederick Police Acting Chief Patrick Grossman. “The department is extremely fortunate and thankful for The Gregory Joseph Troy Memorial Fund's continued support and partnership.”
“The Frederick County Sheriff’s Office is very appreciative of the donation of training equipment to our K-9 Program,” said Lt. Jeff Eyler, assistant patrol operations commander for the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office. “The equipment will assist in the continuous training of our K-9 teams that provide a specialty service for our community. The support received will help to facilitate the overall mission of the Sheriff’s Office as we provide a professional law enforcement service to the citizens of Frederick County.”
Mr. Troy’s legacy lives permanently with the Community Foundation. His memory will be honored forever, with students receiving support to pursue law enforcement careers and local law enforcement receiving support for specialized training. Thanks to the fund in his name, this vital support will remain in our community for generations to come.
