FREDERICK, MD – May 1, 2019: A well-known businessman, politician, and community philanthropist who passed away at age 99 in early 2019 has left a permanent legacy in the form of new funds with The Community Foundation of Frederick County. With his vision for the future, Donald L. Lewis of Thurmont made provisions in his estate to create these funds benefiting local nonprofits: The Donald Lewis Community Impact Fund for The Religious Coalition for Emergency Human Needs, Meals on Wheels, The Community Foundation of Frederick County, Frederick Rescue Mission, Advocates for the Aging, and Mission of Mercy.
Mr. Lewis cared deeply about helping seniors and before his death created The Donald L. Lewis Staff Education Fund for Citizens Care & Rehabilitation Center and Montevue Assisted Living Fund, which helps with tuition and education expenses for facility employees to advance their training. He also cared about those in need in the community and grants from the new funds will support the operations and missions of the named nonprofits.
FREDERICK, MD – December 18, 2018: During its recent FY2019 impact grantsmaking cycle, The Community Foundation of Frederick County provided $402,717.19 to 43 area nonprofits dedicated to improving lives and enhancing Frederick County.
The grants are designed to assist local nonprofits with projects that have meaningful and direct impact on the residents of Frederick County. As a leading source of grant funding in Frederick County, the Community Foundation supports the arts, historic preservation, agriculture, health and human services, education, cultural understanding, animal welfare, scholarships, elder care, youth programs, civic causes, and more.
Impact Grant Funding was provided from the following funds:
The AG-C.I.T.E. Fund:
$1,551.60 to University of Maryland for its Kids Growing with Grains program.
The Animal Care Field of Interest Fund:
$626.24 to TipMe Frederick for veterinary care expenses.
$626.23 to Days End Horse Rescue for abused and neglected horse care.
The Bar Association of Frederick County Justice for All Fund:
$2,918.00 to Frederick Community College Foundation for Maryland Divorce Custody Notebook Training and Assessment Project
$10,000.00 to Mental Health Association of Frederick County for CASA of Frederick County program.

The Brunswick Area Fund:

The William E. Cross Special Needs Fund:
$2,000.00 to Frederick County Government for Infants and Toddlers Program to assist children with developmental delays or qualifying diagnosis prior to age 3.

The Glenn E. and Helen H. Biehl Charitable Fund has been established with The Community Foundation of Frederick County. The fund becomes one of more than 690 funds under management. The fund will provide grants to Evangelical Lutheran Church and Frederick Memorial Hospital. Mr. and Mrs. Biehl were well-known residents of Frederick County. Mr. Biehl served as president and chairman of the board of Frederick County National Bank, and was a member of the Rotary Club of Frederick. Mrs. Biehl was active in the community, volunteering with the Frederick Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, Frederick Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, and Carroll Manor Grange. They will be remembered forever for their service and generosity.
The Colleen M. Remsberg Memorial Fund has been established through estate provisions with The Community Foundation of Frederick County and becomes one of more than 690 funds under management. The fund will provide grants to The Mount Olivet Preservation and Enhancement Fund to assist in the maintenance of Mt. Olivet Cemetery and Key Memorial Chapel; Historical Society of Frederick County, Inc. for the maintenance of properties owned by the Historical Society; Evangelical Lutheran Church in Frederick, Maryland for facility maintenance, and The Delaplaine Visual Arts Education Center for operational support. Mrs. Remsberg was well-known for her love of history, historic preservation, and art, and her legacy continues through this fund.
FREDERICK, MD – July 6, 2018: In memory of a young man who was a selfless servant of his community, The Kristopher Fielding Lewis Memorial Fund has been established with The Community Foundation of Frederick County. The fund becomes one of more than 690 funds under management. Kristopher Lewis was an ocean rescue specialist, volunteer firefighter and emergency medical responder in Corolla, North Carolina, and was responsible for saving many lives. He was a beloved son, brother, and friend, and will be remembered for his devotion to helping those in need. The fund will provide grants to support life guard training and support services and/or scholarships to deserving students.
