Frederick, MD – October 25, 2017: Public sector employees once again have an opportunity to support the community where they live by directing their donations to The Community Foundation of Frederick County through employee giving campaigns. Donations from employee giving campaigns to the Community Foundation will be used toward its work in creating community outreach to promote philanthropy, allowing it to continue its legacy of giving by providing grants to worthy nonprofits and scholarships to deserving students. Since 1986, the Community Foundation has invested more than $53 million in the Frederick County community.
Public sector employees, including federal, state and public school employees are encouraged to direct their charitable giving to the Community Foundation through the following designation numbers. Campaign pledge forms are due by November 17, 2017.

FREDERICK, MD – January 4, 2018: Grants totaling more than $65,000 have been provided from five funds that were created specifically to benefit Citizens Care and Rehabilitation Center, and Montevue Assisted Living. The funds are managed by The Community Foundation of Frederick County, and grants from the funds will be used for projects that improve the quality of life for residents at both facilities.
Grants from The Citizens Care and Rehabilitation Center and Montevue Assisted Living Fund will provide two new upright pianos, and will support the addition of hand railings in the Memory Garden.
A grant from The Friends of Citizens Care and Rehabilitation Center and Montevue Assisted Living Fund will support the addition of hand railings in the Memory Garden.
A grant from The Donald L. Lewis Staff Education Fund for Citizens Care and Rehabilitation Center and Montevue Assisted Living Fund will assist with the cost of tuition, resource materials, and professional development for staff.
A grant from The Citizens Care and Rehabilitation Center and Montevue Assisted Living Special Projects Fund will be used to support staff training and other projects that enhance medical care for residents.
A grant from The Grace Brashear Winpigler Dental Healthcare Fund will help provide dental care and treatment for residents who have financial need.
“The partnership between Frederick County Government and the Community Foundation to support our seniors in these facilities has been excellent,” said Elizabeth Y. Day, president and CEO. “I am especially grateful to the donors who created these funds. They care very much about enhancing the lives of Citizens and Montevue residents.”

Alejandro Cañadas, Ph.D., of Emmitsburg, Maryland, holds the position of Associate Professor of Economics and Finance at Mount St. Mary’s University, and has been teaching there since 2008 after earning his Ph.D. from The Ohio State University. Dr. Cañadas’ other volunteer activities include serving on the finance committee, and teaching confirmation classes at St. Joseph Church in Emmitsburg, and volunteering at Mother Seton School.
Taitia L. Elliott, of Frederick, Maryland, is Senior Vice President, Commercial Banking, for Frederick County Bank (FCB), overseeing business development and ancillary commercial banking services. Her banking career spans 31 years, with 11 years at FCB. Ms. Elliott’s other volunteer activities include the Frederick County Chamber of Commerce, where she is a Leadership Frederick County graduate. She has also served on the board for the Izaak Walton League of America.
Nicole Chafitz Orr, of Thurmont, Maryland is Chairperson for Distinguished Young Women of Frederick County, a program that provides mentoring to outstanding young women who are in their junior year of high school, teaching life skills such as interviewing, social media etiquette, phone skills, and more. Ms. Orr’s other volunteer activities include Hospice of Frederick County as a direct patient service volunteer, fundraising for Lewistown Elementary School PTA, a member of Women’s Giving Circle of Frederick County, and Maryland Scholar Speaker Bureau volunteer for the Maryland Business Roundtable for Education.
The Community Foundation of Frederick County, a public charity, was founded in 1986 by a group of community citizens as a conduit for donors to fulfill their charitable dreams by establishing permanent funds that provide grants and scholarships to nonprofits and deserving students. To date, the Community Foundation has more than 690 funds that support health care, the arts, human service agencies, animal welfare groups, environmental organizations, faith-based organizations, educational institutions, scholarship programs, and other civic causes. Since its inception, more than $53 million has been given back to the Frederick County community.
FREDERICK, MD – December 22, 2017: Mount Olivet Cemetery is more than just a place for the deceased. It is a place full of history, life stories and accomplishments, and a cultural landmark within our community. To ensure that this special place remains a treasured place for all to visit, The Preservation and Enhancement Fund of Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Inc. has been established by its board of directors. The fund becomes one of more than 690 component funds managed by The Community Foundation of Frederick County.
Grants from the fund will assist in the conservation of the Cemetery’s natural beauty and history, repairs to monuments and Key Memorial Chapel, facility improvement, and more. Also, educational programs will be expanded to increase public knowledge of the Cemetery’s history and its use as a private park open to the public for visitation, tourism, and recreation, existing as a “museum without walls.”

FREDERICK, MD – December 14, 2017: Twelve youth received athletic scholarships totaling $3,000 from The Dustin and Courtney Muse Memorial Fund, one of more than 690 component funds of The Community Foundation of Frederick County. Scholarships from the fund helped students in grades 6 through 12 participate in fall and winter basketball, ice hockey, football, volleyball, tennis, synchronized skating, soccer, and dance. FREDERICK, MD – December 14, 2017: The Community Foundation of Frederick County recently presented 22 music and dance scholarships totaling $10,200 from three funds to talented young musicians, in support of vocal, instrumental music, or dance instruction and training.
Fourteen students received scholarships from The Dustin and Courtney Muse Memorial Fund, founded by Dustin and Courtney’s parents in their memory. Scholars are Abel Barrows, Catherine Derr, Owen Fay, Valerie Fell, Owen Fell, Alexander Hayes, Delaney Heurich, Kristina Kaarid, Emmaline Main, Isabella Marchena, Claire Smith, Chasie Thompson, Isaiah Whitmore, and Lydia Whitmore.
Two students received scholarships from The Guss Family Scholarship Fund for the Arts, founded by Tuvy Guss and Tracey Ellis-Guss. Scholars are Lyra Garrett and Joseph Hill.
Two students received scholarships from The Thomas F. Waters Memorial Dance Scholarship, founded by Karen Waters and Joy Ellis to honor the memory of Tom Waters. Scholars are Anna Arrington and Taylor Wood.
Since 1986, the Community Foundation has provided scholarships to deserving students and grants to worthy nonprofit organizations, contributing more than $53 million throughout Frederick County.
FREDERICK, MD – January 16, 2018: To lower barriers to post-secondary education, a coalition of local organizations known as the Frederick County FAFSA Coalition announces five workshops to assist in completing the FAFSA form. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid is the first step in accessing a variety of scholarships and federal funding. Financial aid experts will be present to answer questions. The workshops are free; registration is strongly recommended by visiting www.FrederickCountyGives.org/FAFSAFinish. Each event is being held from 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. at the following locations:
January 30, 2018, Frederick High School; February 6, 2018, Governor Thomas Johnson High School; February 7, 2018, Catoctin High School; February 8, 2018, Brunswick High School, and February 12, 2018 – Walkersville High School.
The Community Foundation of Frederick County’s online scholarship application will open on March 1, 2018 through March 31, 2018, with just over $1 million available. By completing one general application, students may qualify for more than 250 scholarships. Students about to complete their senior year of high school, students already enrolled in a trade school, college or university, and non-traditional students over the age of 21 are eligible to apply. Scholarship criteria are established by the scholarship funds’ founding donors. Some scholarships do not consider financial need. All students are encouraged to apply.
Free scholarship information sessions to learn about the variety of available scholarships, how to access the application, tips for completing the application successfully, and more are scheduled at most area high schools between the dates of January 30, 2018 and February 28, 2018. The Community Foundation of Frederick County is a recognized leader in providing scholarships to area students, made possible by generous donors. For the 2017-2018 academic year alone, the Community Foundation provided more than $1 million in scholarships to area students.
