Frederick, MD – October 25, 2017: Public sector employees once again have an opportunity to support the community where they live by directing their donations to The Community Foundation of Frederick County through employee giving campaigns. Donations from employee giving campaigns to the Community Foundation will be used toward its work in creating community outreach to promote philanthropy, allowing it to continue its legacy of giving by providing grants to worthy nonprofits and scholarships to deserving students. Since 1986, the Community Foundation has invested more than $53 million in the Frederick County community.
Public sector employees, including federal, state and public school employees are encouraged to direct their charitable giving to the Community Foundation through the following designation numbers. Campaign pledge forms are due by November 17, 2017.

Taitia L. Elliott, of Frederick, Maryland, is Senior Vice President, Commercial Banking, for Frederick County Bank (FCB), overseeing business development and branch operations. Her banking career spans 21 years, with 11 years at FCB. Ms. Elliott’s other volunteer activities include the Frederick County Chamber of Commerce, where she is a Leadership Frederick County graduate. She has also served on the board for the Izaak Walton League of America.
Nicole Chafitz Orr, of Thurmont, Maryland is Chairperson for Distinguished Young Women of Frederick County, a program that provides mentoring to outstanding young women who are in their junior year of high school, teaching life skills such as interviewing, social media etiquette, phone skills, and more. Ms. Orr’s other volunteer activities include Hospice of Frederick County as a direct patient service volunteer, fundraising for Lewistown Elementary School PTA, a member of Women’s Giving Circle of Frederick County, and Maryland Scholar Speaker Bureau volunteer for the Maryland Business Roundtable for Education.
The Community Foundation of Frederick County, a public charity, was founded in 1986 by a group of community citizens as a conduit for donors to fulfill their charitable dreams by establishing permanent funds that provide grants and scholarships to nonprofits and deserving students. To date, the Community Foundation has more than 690 funds that support health care, the arts, human service agencies, animal welfare groups, environmental organizations, faith-based organizations, educational institutions, scholarship programs, and other civic causes. Since its inception, more than $53 million has been given back to the Frederick County community.
The new grants bring the Women’s Giving Circle grant total to just over $1.1 million since the first grants were provided in 2006 in support of its mission to provide programs and services promoting self-sufficiency for women and those who depend on them. The following nonprofits received grants:
Advocates for Homeless Families received a $4,000 grant to provide assistance accessing permanent housing or avoid energy shutoff, a $3,000 grant to provide or maintain reliable transportation and childcare, and a $500 grant for its urban gardens program.
Children of Incarcerated Parents Partnership received a $2,000 grant to provide higher education assistance to caregivers of children whose lives have been affected by an incarcerated parent and a $600 grant to provide women inmates leaving the Detention Center with resources that will lead them toward success.
Care Net Pregnancy Center of Frederick received a $2,400 grant to provide safe travel for 100 children in the Frederick community by providing new car seats to families and a $3,900 grant to provide diaper supplies to mothers who need financial assistance.
Daybreak Adult Day Services received a $5,000 grant to provide respite care and support to women caring for older adults.
Frederick Community College Foundation received a $2,500 grant for the Allied Health Academy to provide transportation and childcare assistance to women in the allied health program, and a $7,000 grant for Project Forward Step to provide transportation and childcare assistance to returning single parents who need financial assistance.
Frederick Memorial Hospital received a $3,000 grant for the Survivors Offering Support program to provide hospital integrated peer mentoring to newly diagnosed breast cancer patients.
Frederick Rescue Mission, Inc. received a $10,000 grant to support the Faith House Program to provide support to homeless mothers and children.
Heartly House received a $10,000 grant to provide medical accompaniment and advocacy for victims of sexual assault and domestic violence.
Housing Authority of the City of Frederick received a $7,000 grant and a $6,500 grant, both in support of the Women Succeeding in Education program, helping women in public housing meet their education and employment goals.
Interfaith Housing Alliance received a $6,500 grant in support of its Self Sufficiency Counseling initiative that teaches women effective financial management.
Literacy Council of Frederick County, Inc. received a $3,000 grant to provide textbooks and curricular materials to women to support their literacy goals and improve their self-sufficiency and employment opportunities.
Mental Health Association of Frederick County received a $7,000 grant in support of its Parent Coach program to support non-custodial mothers and a $7,000 grant in support of its Healthy Families Frederick program to improve parenting skills.
Mission of Mercy, Inc. received a $4,000 grant in support of dental services for women, a $2,300 grant to provide medications for women, a $2,300 grant to provide medical care for women with diabetes and a $2,300 grant to provide medical care for women with hypertension.
Partners In Care received a $6,000 grant to help coordinate volunteers with older women who receive 2,000 free rides yearly for medical appointments and assistance for everyday living tasks.
Planned Parenthood of Maryland received a $7,500 grant to provide reproductive health care screenings, tests and treatments to women living at or below poverty level.
The Religious Coalition for Emergency Human Needs received a $10,000 grant for eviction and utility interruption prevention for women and their families, and a $7,000 grant to help provide emergency shelter and case management support for homeless women with children.
Second Chances Garage received a $7,500 grant in support of the low-cost vehicle repair program for women, and a $4,000 grant to provide refurbished vehicles for women.
Seton Center, Inc. received a $10,000 grant in support of the DePaul Dental Women’s program to provide dental screenings and services to low income women.
Student Homelessness Initiative Partnership of Frederick County (SHIP) received a $10,000 grant to provide expanded emergency shelter for homeless mothers and their children.
Wells House at Gale Recovery received an $8,000 grant in support of drug and alcohol recovery and employment services for women and a $1,200 grant to provide a computer station with printer at The Gale House.

FREDERICK, MD – September 27, 2017: The Community Foundation of Frederick County will hold its 31st Annual Report to the Community on Thursday, November 16 at 5:30 p.m. at the Clarion Inn Frederick Event Center. The event will thank donors and highlight prior fiscal year accomplishments. In addition, the 2017 Wertheimer Fellows for Excellence in Volunteerism will be honored.
Wertheimer honorees are selected for their selfless contributions of time, energy, and talents to the Frederick County community. The awards are made possible by a bequest from the late Janis Miller Wertheimer, a well-known Frederick businesswoman and prolific volunteer whose legacy of giving continues through her planned gift that created, among three funds, The Janis Miller Wertheimer Endowment Fund with the Community Foundation.
The Janis Miller Wertheimer Endowment Fund has provided each Wertheimer Fellow with $25,000 to add to an existing Community Foundation fund or create a new fund. The fund also provides a $1,000 grant to a nonprofit of choice by the Youth in Action honoree. Through these awards, their legacies of giving will continue to touch lives and help those who are served through area nonprofit organizations.
The following individuals have been chosen to receive the 2017 Wertheimer Fellows for Excellence in Volunteerism Award and the Wertheimer Youth in Action Award.
RaeAnn E. Butler, of Frederick, has made volunteering a lifelong second career. Her passions are helping seniors in Frederick County and historic preservation. She helped launch Daybreak Adult Day Services and, as a 20+ year member of the Elder Services Provider Council, was instrumental in creating the annual Elder Expo and conference. Ms. Butler served on the board of Frederick County Commission on Aging from 2006-2014, and recently served on the Seniors First Committee. She collaborated with Frederick Community College’s Gerontology Advisory Committee to establish its gerontology certificate program and has organized fundraising for numerous organizations serving seniors.
Ms. Butler is a board member of Heritage Frederick and has contributed countless hours to strategic planning, fundraising, volunteer recruitment and more. Through her membership with Carrollton Manor DAR, she helped coordinate the Middletown African American Methodist Episcopal Cemetery project, a book about those buried there, and a symposium about African American history and genealogy.
Ms. Butler’s other volunteer service includes serving currently as president of the Hood College Alumni Association; co-chair of Evangelical Reformed United Church of Christ’s Building Project Construction Implementation Committee; board member for Western Maryland Alzheimer’s Association; and previously, a board member and first aid instructor with the Frederick County Chapter of the American Red Cross.
With her Wertheimer Award, Ms. Butler has established The Butler Collins Community Impact Fund to provide grants to Frederick County nonprofits, with a focus on seniors and historic preservation and education.
Daniel W. Campbell, of New Market, is dedicated to helping individuals, families, and veterans who need a hand-up. He volunteers with Mission of Mercy’s medical and dental clinic and helps coordinate services for people through the Frederick Department of Social Services with the involvement of the Frederick Faith Community Partnership.
Mr. Campbell, a retired United States Air Force officer, is the mentor coordinator with the Frederick County Veteran’s Treatment Court (VTC). He provides peer support and helps veterans facing a variety of violations obtain counseling and Veteran Administration benefits. He is active with The American Legion and Disabled American Veterans.
Mr. Campbell is also the volunteer director for JustServe Initiative in Frederick County, a non-denominational website that connects people who wish to volunteer with nonprofits, faith-based organizations, and government service entities. In addition, he has created a partnership with Seed of Life Nurseries and organized volunteers to plant and harvest an acre-sized garden to supply food pantries and soup kitchens with produce. He has coordinated warm-clothing drives for Frederick Rescue Mission. He also serves as a board member for the Purple Moon Project, and he has assisted many families in need of food, clothing, transportation, and other basic needs.
With his Wertheimer Award, Mr. Campbell has established The Major Dan Campbell Veteran Services Fund to support veteran mentoring and also Mission of Mercy’s medical and dental programs.
Vanessa Fox, of Frederick, already has a long record of volunteer service in Frederick County. A student at Tuscarora High School, Ms. Fox learned about homelessness and socio-economic conditions in Frederick County and, with her English class, attended the Frederick County Coalition for the Homeless Forum in 2016. As a result, Ms. Fox and several classmates created Welcome Home Kits for families transitioning from homelessness to semi-permanent housing for The Religious Coalition for Emergency Human Needs. Wanting to do more, Ms. Fox approached her teacher with an idea to organize a group to promote philanthropy for youth. Now, The Local Love Project has become a successful youth volunteer group at Tuscarora High School with 80 students involved. The group wanted to dedicate themselves to helping one nonprofit and, after research and meeting with various organizations, they decided to support Frederick Rescue Mission. Ms. Fox, who currently serves as president of The Local Love Project, has been instrumental in cultivating a close working relationship with Frederick Rescue Mission to support its food distribution center, organizing students to serve breakfast and lunch, and also creating fellowship for the residents.
Ms. Fox has also volunteered at Ballenger Creek Elementary as a tutor, the soup kitchen at Frederick Community Action Agency, and is active with her church, Frederick Christian Fellowship.
With her Wertheimer Youth in Action Award, Ms. Fox has selected Frederick Rescue Mission to receive a grant in support of its activities.
Welcome to the Community Foundation’s new website, launched on October 24, 2017. With this new website, we’re “seeing things differently,” and we hope you enjoy exploring the pages, photos, articles, and information presented.
“Seeing Things Differently” is the theme of our 31st Annual Report to the Community on November 16, 2017. We don’t have a real crystal ball to predict the future, but throughout FY2017, staff and committees took an intentional look at how we could make our grants and scholarships processes more impactful. By looking at these processes differently, we were able to do things like increase communication with school counselors to demystify the application process and further embrace the partnership. We coordinated the first FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) Finish event, enabling more students and families to complete this important form that is critical to scholarship applications. The next series of FAFSA events are scheduled for January and February 2018. The Grants Committee and grantees were positioned to look more deeply at the issues, opening conversations between grantees that led to more partnerships and identified and shared local expertise that could improve projects and meet more needs in the community.
The community saw things differently too, as thousands of generous donors gave $4.5 million in FY2017. Most gifts were added to our existing endowment that spends 5 percent of the annual market value which generated $5.57 million in grants and scholarships that benefited education, youth programs, elder care, historic preservation, health care, those who were homeless or precariously housed, animal welfare, the environment, the arts, and much more.
As we look forward, we’ll continue to see things differently by continuing our leadership role in the community to help ensure Frederick County’s vibrant future. Thank you for your support and the trust you have placed in us. It is For Good. Forever. For Frederick County.
